The formation of the Grand Central Partnership, Inc., in
1985, and its formal incorporation three years later, was the direct response
to that question. Led by a coalition of property owners, tenants and city
officials, GCP sought to revive a commercial district that, in many ways,
had been neglected and overlooked as a central business hub.
Following the recommendations of a GCP-commissioned master plan that outlined the steps
essential to the rejuvenation of the neighborhood, GCP assessed the needs
of the neighborhood with respect to both its limitations and its untapped
resources. The organization designed and implemented an ambitious program, centered
around streetscape improvement, public safety, sanitation, and visitor
services, that eventually restored vigor and diversity to the area.
During the next 15 years, GCP provided the impetus for an urban makeover
that was nothing short of extraordinary. A reborn neighborhood aesthetic
and cleaner, safer streets spurred private investment and drove pedestrian
traffic into the area. Today, the Grand Central neighborhood is among New York City's most vibrant
hubs - a bustling center of commercial activity by day, a destination
for fun and culture by night.
