The New York Public Library’s Mid-Manhattan Library (455 Fifth Avenue at 40th Street – 212-340-0863) currently has unique “Mad Men” related displays in two of its Fifth Avenue-fronting windows that just happen to coincide with the marketing campaign for the show’s March 25 series return (You probably haven’t been able to miss the posters from the campaign of Mad Men main character Don Draper’s iconic free fall that are plastered throughout much of the subway station below Grand Central Terminal.). Yet the intricate, thoughtfully-created, and intriguing displays at the library are not part of the marketing campaign, but are – instead – the work of Billy Parrott, a managing librarian of the New York Public Library’s art and picture collection.

A devoted fan and “Mad Men” encyclopedia, Parrott has created displays – which will probably stay up through the end of the month – that reference the show’s attention to detail and insistence on accurately portraying the era in which the series is set.

If you have the opportunity, walk by today and view the vintage print ads from the library’s collection – which was started in 1915 and has 1.2 million images – that are tacked on the walls (several are directly linked to the show’s plots), as well as the many other interesting items in each window’s display.

The Morgan Library & Museum has two new exhibitions that open this week: one of artist Dan Flavin's drawing and selections from his collection of other artists' drawings; the other an exhibition of thirty rarely-seen works from The Morgan's permanent collection.

The Morgan Library & Museum (225 Madison Avenue between 36th and 37th Streets – 212-685-0008) is now exhibiting nearly thirty extraordinary works from its extensive collections of printed books, illuminated manuscripts, music, and literary and historical manuscripts. The diverse objects—which include a portion of The Scarlet Letter, fifteenth-century tarot cards, a first edition of William Faulkner’s Light in August, and a John Cage manuscript—are now on display in the Morgan’s sumptuous McKim building. These works will remain on view through June 3, 2012.

To learn more about the items and the exhibition, click here.

Additionally, The Morgan has an exhibition of artist Dan Flavin’s drawings opening tomorrow, Friday, February 17.

Best known for his groundbreaking fluorescent light installations, Dan Flavin (1933-1996) was also an avid draftsman and collector of drawings. The show includes more than one hundred drawings by the artist — from early abstract expressionist watercolors of the 1950s and portraits and landscape sketches, to studies for his seminal light installations and late pastels of sailboats. In addition, the exhibition will feature nearly fifty works from Flavin’s personal collection of drawings, including nineteenth-century American landscapes by Hudson River School artists, Japanese drawings, and twentieth-century works by artists such as Piet Mondrian, Donald Judd, and Sol LeWitt.

The exhibition will be on view through July 1, 2012.

“The world knows Dan Flavin through the iconic fluorescent light installations on which his reputation rests,” said William M. Griswold, director of The Morgan Library & Museum. “But few people are aware that these magnificent pieces often began as sketches, schematic drawings, and diagrams on graph paper. Throughout his career, Flavin returned to drawing to explore new ideas and new themes, and collected drawings by old and modern masters to serve as sources of inspiration. The Morgan is delighted to present this first-ever retrospective look at the key role that drawing played in the creative process of one of the twentieth-century’s most innovative artists.”
